Chest Dips

Compound · Weight × reps

Support yourself on parallel bars with arms long, shoulders controlled, and legs clear of the floor. Lean slightly forward and bend the elbows to lower until your shoulders reach a comfortable depth, then press the bars down to rise. Let the elbows travel back and out only as your joints tolerate. Avoid dropping into the bottom, shrugging, or forcing a deep stretch. Use an assisted-dip machine or band to reduce load; add weight only when you can enter, stabilize, and exit the bars safely, because the forward lean emphasizes the chest but does not remove the triceps.

HOW TO DO CHEST DIPS

  1. Take the bars, lock out, and lean the torso slightly forward. Toes can drift behind you.
  2. Lower until the shoulders are at or just below the elbows, only as deep as the shoulders allow.
  3. Press back up without shrugging into the neck. Stop shy of a slam at the top.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Upright “triceps” dips logged as chest dips. Upright dips belong on the triceps-dip slug. Lean if this is a chest movement.
  • Dumping into the bottom. Depth without control is a shoulder problem, not hypertrophy.

VARIATIONS

PROGRESSIONS

  1. Assisted dips or feet-on-the-floor partials.
  2. Full-range bodyweight sets of 6–10.
  3. Add a dip belt when extra sets are easy. Log the extra weight in LIFTAG.

PROGRAMMING NOTES

Treat weighted dips like a press: 3–4 hard sets. If you add a belt, log the plate, not just “bodyweight,” or the PR chart never moves.
