Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift — hamstrings compound exercise in the LIFTAG library

Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift

Compound · Weight × reps

Stand with dumbbells in front of your thighs, feet about hip-width, knees softly bent, and trunk braced. Push your hips back while sliding the weights close to your legs until your hamstrings limit the hinge, then drive the floor away and extend the hips to stand. Keep your spine steady and pressure over the whole foot. Avoid turning the descent into a squat or reaching the dumbbells toward the floor by rounding. Range depends on hamstring length and body proportions; straps can reduce grip limits when the target muscles can safely handle more load.

HOW TO DO DUMBBELL ROMANIAN DEADLIFT

  1. Stand tall with dumbbells in front of the thighs. Soften the knees and lock that angle in.
  2. Push the hips back. The bells graze the thighs, then the shins. Spine stays long.
  3. Stop when the hamstrings run out — often mid-shin — not because the bells can still travel toward the floor.
  4. Drive the hips forward to stand. Squeeze the glutes; do not shrug the weights.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Squatting the dumbbells down. If the knees travel forward, you lost the hinge. Push the hips, not the knees.
  • Chasing the floor every rep. Dumbbells can pass the feet. That extra range is often a rounded back, not extra hamstring. Stop at tension.
  • Logging it as a barbell RDL. Different implement, different PR. Keep this slug even if the hinge looks the same on film.
  • Letting the bells drift forward. If they float out in front of the toes, the back takes the set. Keep them close enough to brush clothing.

VARIATIONS

PROGRESSIONS

  1. Hip hinge with a dowel along the spine.
  2. Light dumbbells to a mid-shin stop you can repeat.
  3. Add load when the back angle never changes across the set.
  4. Pause at the stretch, or a small deficit, once the bells already clear the floor easily.

PROGRAMMING NOTES

Primary dumbbell hinge: 3–4 sets of 6–12. It will sit well below your barbell RDL — that is expected. If LIFTAG is plotting these on the barbell chart, you logged the wrong lift. Travel and home-gym sessions belong here, not on conventional deadlift.
