Smith Machine Shoulder Press — shoulders compound exercise in the LIFTAG library

Smith Machine Shoulder Press

Compound · Weight × reps

The fixed path reduces balance demands while the deltoids and triceps produce the press, but it does not provide “full stability” or mean a heavier load is appropriate. Test alignment with an empty bar, use a supported bench when intended, and stop if the rail path causes shoulder pinching or excessive back extension.

HOW TO DO SMITH MACHINE SHOULDER PRESS

  1. Place a bench or standing position so the Smith bar can travel overhead without forcing the head, shoulders, or lower back around the rails.
  2. Set safety stops, grip slightly wider than the shoulders, brace, and unhook the bar.
  3. Lower to a comfortable height near the upper chest, then press to straight arms while keeping wrists stacked and ribs controlled.
