Machine Hack Squat — quadriceps compound exercise in the LIFTAG library

Machine Hack Squat

Compound · Weight × reps

Set the shoulder pads and platform position so the back and pelvis remain supported and both feet are secure. Release the safeties, brace, and bend the hips and knees as the sled descends. Lower only to the depth where the feet stay flat, knees track with the toes, and pelvis does not roll away from the pad. Press through the platform to extend the legs without locking the knees forcefully, then reset the safeties after the set. The hack squat trains the quadriceps and glutes with assistance from the hamstrings; stance and machine geometry affect joint demands. Use the built-in stops, never bounce at the bottom, and choose depth by control rather than a fixed 90-degree rule.

HOW TO DO MACHINE HACK SQUAT

  1. Get the shoulders under the pads, feet forward enough that the knees track over mid-foot at the bottom.
  2. Unrack, descend until the hips are at least as deep as a squat you would count in the rack.
  3. Drive up without the low back peeling off the pad. Re-rack with the hands, not a hope.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Feet so far forward it becomes a glute press. Fine if that is the point. If you wanted a squat, bring the feet back.
  • Logging hack squat as back squat. Different groove, different PR. Keep this slug.

VARIATIONS

PROGRESSIONS

  1. Light hack squats to depth.
  2. Add load when the pad contact never breaks.
  3. Pause reps if you bounce.

PROGRAMMING NOTES

Use as a primary squat when the barbell back is fried, or as the second squat of the week. 3–4 sets of 6–12. The tag on the sled should open this exercise, not “squat.”
