Seated Barbell Shoulder Press

Compound · Weight × reps

MUSCLES WORKED

  • PRIMARY
  • SECONDARY

If the bench allows it, adjust the seat so your feet are firmly planted and you can reach the bar without pulling your shoulders far behind you. Move your head slightly back to let the bar pass, then bring your head forward beneath the bar as the repetition finishes with the weight balanced over your shoulders. Do not use leg drive, excessively arch your lower back, or lower the bar behind your head. After the final repetition, rerack it carefully, preferably with assistance. The exercise primarily trains the deltoids, with the triceps and upper chest assisting.
