Barbell Front Squat — quadriceps compound exercise in the LIFTAG library

Barbell Front Squat

Compound · Weight × reps

Set the bar in a rack near collarbone height and support it across the fronts of your shoulders with a clean, crossed-arm, or strap-assisted grip. Step out, lift the elbows, brace, and squat with the whole foot grounded. Descend only while you can keep the bar balanced over your base and elbows from collapsing, then push the floor away to stand. Avoid holding the bar in your hands or forcing wrist extension to create the rack. Use safeties, and choose a grip, stance, and depth that suit your mobility and proportions.

HOW TO DO BARBELL FRONT SQUAT

  1. Rack the bar on the front delts. Clean grip or crossed-arm — pick the one you can keep the elbows up with.
  2. Walk out, brace, and sit between the legs with an upright torso.
  3. Hit a repeatable depth, then stand without the elbows collapsing and dumping the bar.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Elbows dropping in the hole. The bar rolls and the set is over. Upper-back work and a slightly narrower grip usually fix this faster than “try harder.”
  • Turning it into a back squat with a front rack. If you are folding forward, drop the load. Front squat is an upright pattern.

VARIATIONS

PROGRESSIONS

  1. Goblet squat.
  2. Empty-bar front squat holds in the rack.
  3. Working sets once the rack position is boring.

PROGRAMMING NOTES

Great second squat day or Olympic-lifting main squat. Loads will sit well below back squat — that is expected. Do not chase back-squat numbers on this slug.
